MD of Taber August 11 Special Council Meeting highlights

At its special council meeting on August 11, the Municipal District of Taber (MDT) Council reviewed several items of interest to residents and the broader agricultural community. Highlights included a potential international trade mission, a request for intermunicipal support, and grazing lease matters. Here is a summary of the discussions.

Team Canada Trade Mission to India 

Council discussed an opportunity to take part in a Team Canada Trade Mission to India, organized by the Government of Canada’s Trade Commissioner Service (TCS).

Scheduled for October 12 to 17, 2026, the mission will visit Mumbai and Bengaluru and focus on six priority sectors: aerospace and space, clean technologies and energy transition, information and communications technologies, life sciences, forestry and wood products, and agri-food.

Of these sectors, agri-food aligns most closely with the MDT’s economic development goals. India represents a growing market for Canadian agri-food exports, including premium grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, food ingredients, plant proteins, and value-added food products.

The estimated cost is a minimum of $6,000 per participant, covering economy airfare, accommodations, meals, ground transportation, and other travel expenses. The Alberta Export and Expansion Program may reimburse up to 50 per cent of eligible travel expenses.

Organizations wishing to join must apply and be selected by TCS, with a maximum of two representatives each.

 SouthGrow invited its member municipalities to consider applying under its organizational umbrella. MDT administration will engage with representatives from SouthGrow and Canada’s Premier Food Corridor to gather information on the mission, the application process, and considerations for potential participation.

Village of Barnwell Playground Construction
Project Request 

Council discussed a request from the Village of Barnwell for intermunicipal in-kind support toward its Playground Construction Project. The request seeks assistance in the form of gravel, hauling, and staff support, with an estimated monetary value of approximately $3,320.

Grazing Lease Parcels 

The Municipal District of Taber (MDT) discussed six sections for the 2026 grazing season, but the results split into two outcomes.

For a five-quarter block (NW 26-7-14 W4, SW 26-7-14 W4, NE 27-7-14 W4, SE 27-7-14 W4, and SW 27-7-14 W4), the sole bid received was ruled ineligible because it carried a condition requesting a First Right of Purchase caveat, which conflicted with the tender’s eligibility criteria tied to Council’s land management direction.

For NE 9-12-18 W4, a qualifying bid came in at $1,400 per year plus GST.

 Administration therefore recommended rejecting the ineligible bid on the five-quarter block, while approving the bid for NE 9-12-18 W4.
