In an attempt to refocus caucus to deal with issues facing the province, Premier Ed Stelmach recently opted for a cabinet shuffle to re-energize his party’s leadership. Little Bow MLA Barry McFarland has seen his share of cabinet shuffles during his tenure as MLA, but he never makes predictions.

It was a season of ups and downs for sugar beet growers in the Taber area, from the less-than-ideal growing conditions experienced due to a cool, wet spring, to the unseasonable heat of September raising hopes of an increased yield.

Friday night, the top-10 growers for the Vauxhall region were announced at the annual beet banquet. This year, Laus Stiekema took top honours with a crop of 28.12 adjusted tonnes per acre on 142 acres. D. Wolosuk Farms Ltd. came in second at 28.07 on 194.3 acres, while J. Wolosuk Farms Ltd. was third at 27.92 on 146.1 acres.

Mother Nature has put an end to the 2009 sugar beet harvest. With 5,000 acres of beets still left in southern Alberta fields, the cold and snow has forced farmers out of the fields. “There’s not much we can do about it,” said Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, agricultural superintendent for Lantic Sugar Inc. “We’ve worked with crop insurance and rejected some fields due to quality.”
