The Canadian Wheat Board can certainly improve the way it serves Western Canadian farmers. That’s the word from Brian Otto, the Warner-area District 3 director candidate, who said in his travels to meeting after meeting throughout the district, a few issues have popped up. “The board has not met the marketing expectations in durum, barley and winter wheat. The board has not met their cash-flow demands on their farms, and it hasn’t given them their delivery options and price expectations.”

Brett Meinert is firm in his belief a single desk marketing system for the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) is in the best interests of a majority of Prairie farmers. “Challenges are the division within the farming population about whether the Canadian Wheat Board should exist, and whether single-desk marketing is beneficial — I say that it is. There are a few out there — well, quite a few out there that think otherwise.” Meinert, a Shaunavon, Sask. area farmer, is running for the directorship in District 3 in the present CWB election.

The 2010 District 3 Canadian Wheat Board election has a local flavour, as a farmer from the Enchant area has thrown his hat into the ring. Lynn Jacobson is attempting to replace the retiring Larry Hill as this area’s CWB board rep, and added market access for Western Canadian grain is a big issue for this district.

Numbers are dwindling with various 4-H clubs in the area and Becky Domolewski, key member for Taber and District 4-H, added kids may be missing out on an opportunity of a lifetime. “Right now, all the clubs are starting to get rolling with their activities and our club (Grassy Beef) has really felt a decline, but 4-H in general has declined,” said Domolewski. “We’re finding it hard picking up members that are still interested in it.” Domolewski has been in at the ground level as a 4-H member since she was nine years old, and the 16 year old has seen how much the experience has been to her life for seven years.

In the Bow River Irrigation District (BRID), this year’s poor growing season translated into extreme low levels of water usage throughout the area. General manager Richard Phillips imparted some good news for producers — low water usage should make for good water levels for the BRID during next year’s growing season.
