The following are selected minutes of the Nov. 2 Vauxhall town council meeting.
Ag Society Delegation
A group of representatives from the Vauxhall Ag Society, including president Brian Schnarr, presented a cheque in the amount of $20,000 to the town to assist in repairs and renovations to the Recreational Complex currently in progress or envisioned for the future.
Mayor Lois Maloney advised the delegation of a list of projects concerning the Rec. Complex in which the contribution could be put to good use, including the current lighting upgrade.
“There will have to be some creative thinking,” said Maloney.
Chinook Arch Regional Library Council Survey
Mayor Maloney collected information from councillors on their perceptions of the quality of service provided to council and the community by Vauxhall Library’s continued membership within the Chinook Arch Regional Library System.
The Chinook Arch Regional Library System is required to report to the Libraries Branch of Alberta Municipal Affairs on member council satisfaction in three areas.
An initial report provided information on the Chinook Arch mission statement, the various system services provided by membership, and an annual report of highlights for 2008.
Present councillors rated the services provided from good to excellent and submitted the information to Mayor Maloney after brief discussion.
The survey must be completed and submitted to Chinook Arch headquarters in Lethbridge by Nov. 30.
Open Discussion
Before the conclusion of the meeting, councillors raised various issues for discussion in open forum.
Coun. Peter Van Uden brought up the issue of Bill 50, the Electric Statutes Amendment Act, and the opposing public opinions surrounding aspects of the bill and its potential repercussions for municipalities. A general agreement to attempt to secure more information on Bill 50 and its implications was unanimous amongst councillors.
Mayor Maloney also expressed interest in the impending renewal and potential re-negotiation of the RCMP’s provincial contract with Alberta in 2012, and the perceived effects this might have on the Taber/Vauxhall detachment and other detachments throughout the province. Maloney felt council would need to be vigilant to ensure that the RCMP and the detachment remain aware of the town’s concerns regarding local policing.
In Alberta, communities with a population under 5,000 do not need a separate contract at added expense with the RCMP.
