With marketing freedom now achieved for Western Canadian barley growers, creating robust marketing systems is a vital next step.
“As far as challenges go, I don’t see a lot of challenges,” said Brian Otto, president of the Western Barley Growers Association (WBGA).
“Barley producers have been asking for this for a long time. This challenge, of trying to free up barley, we started on this back in 1996. Malt companies are out there offering malt prices right now, trying to contract production.”
The WBGA is exploring options and opportunities to re-focus and re-invigorate Western Canada’s barley industry.

There is nothing but good news these days for southern Alberta sugar beet growers.
From the timing of harvest completion, the operation of the sugar factory to the quality and tonnage of this year’s crop, 2011 is looking to be a banner year.

Yesterday, the federal government introduced legislation in Parliament to eliminate the single desk marketing structure of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and give marketing freedom to Western Canadian farmers.
Speaking at a farm in Acme earlier this week, federal agriculture minister Gerry Ritz outlined many of the reasons why the Conservative government is committed to giving wheat and barley farmers control over marketing.

The single desk marketing structure of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) has been slated for destruction by a federal government determined to give marketing freedom to Prairie farmers.
Yesterday, the Conservative government tabled legislation in the House of Commons that if passed, will abolish the CWB’s single desk and allow farmers to market their grain as they see fit.

As debate continues to heat up over the intended removal by the federal government of the Canadian Wheat Board’s (CWB) single-desk marketing structure, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz isn’t backing down from a decision he said will be of benefit to all farmers in Western Canada.
Speaking last week during a press conference at the conclusion of the 36th Cairns Group (CG) Ministerial Meeting in Saskatoon, Sask., Ritz applauded the support given by the group for removing the CWB’s nearly 77-year monopoly on grain marketing.

After months of sabre-rattling on both sides of the single-desk marketing issue, the results of the Canadian Wheat Board’s (CWB) producer plebiscite have scored a moral victory over Ottawa — if not a legally-binding one.
Released on Monday, the long-awaited results show a majority of farmers wish to retain their ability to market wheat and barley through a single-desk system. More than 60 per cent of respondents voted in favour of retaining the single desk for wheat, and 51 per cent voted to retain it for barley.

Mini harvest starts for local beet growers PDF Print

The mini-harvest for sugar beets started Monday at a trio of receiving stations, with the main harvest still slated to begin Oct. 1.
Andrew Llewelyn-Jones, agricultural superintendent for Lantic Inc., said the beets that come in during the mini-harvest go right into processing to get the plant in Taber up and running for the main harvest.
“We’ll open stations where growers are indicating they will go.”
