This year will not go down as one of the best for the oil and gas industry here in Alberta. As Vauxhall Advance subscribers have read about lately in our feature series, The Oilpatch: The Challenges Facing Alberta, 2009 was certainly a down year. Crude oil prices were cut in half from highs of about $140 in 2008 to settle at about $70 per barrel for much of 2009. Indications are oil prices could see a small bump in 2010 but in the overall scheme of things, that is just one part of the equation.

The fall session of the legislature didn’t raise any eyebrows apart from a contentious bill carried forward from the spring session, Bill 50. Otherwise known as the Electric Statutes Amendment Act, Bill 50 raised public fears of big government hegemony over the lowly private property owner in the name of the province’s corporate interests.

There is no doubt about it — today is a very difficult time to be running a service club or organization in Alberta. Clubs across the province, and likely the country, have found it increasingly difficult to stay afloat, not due to financial reasons, but because of a lack of manpower.

Gifts this holiday season will range from the small and inexpensive to the large and pricey, but nothing can compare to the gift of life. Everyone knows December can be a crazy month. In addition to holiday parties, school and sports commitments and general holiday planning and preparation, most people feel there just are not enough days left in the month to get everything done. This makes it even more difficult for the blood services to get people in the doors to donate much needed blood.
