Gifts this holiday season will range from the small and inexpensive to the large and pricey, but nothing can compare to the gift of life. Everyone knows December can be a crazy month. In addition to holiday parties, school and sports commitments and general holiday planning and preparation, most people feel there just are not enough days left in the month to get everything done. This makes it even more difficult for the blood services to get people in the doors to donate much needed blood. In December 6,000 units of blood are required locally, which means 6,000 people are needed to give up a couple of hours to make the trip to the Lethbridge blood donor clinic and donate what amounts to the gift of life for someone in need. In this season of giving, why not give the ultimate gift. No matter how much thought, preparation and money goes into purchasing or making gifts this holiday season, nothing can compare to a blood donation that could actually save a life. While there are some people who are certainly afraid of anything involving a needle, the process for making a donation is handled quickly and efficiently by a compassionate staff who can help a person deal with their fear long enough to make the vital donation. For those who do not have any fear associated with the donation process, there is no excuse for not booking an appointment. Most people can find time to shop, go out to lunch, attend a holiday party or just enjoy some leisure time so there is no excuse for not being able to donate a couple of hours or less to make a donation this month and on a regular basis throughout the year. While donation campaigns help raise awareness and increase donations the fact remains, donations are needed on a regular basis throughout the year. If everyone in Canada who could donate, did donate there would never be a shortage of blood. No one will ever know when they or their loved one may need a blood transfusion. It is an act of compassion to donate blood in order to ensure those who are suffering from a medical condition, going through surgery, under going medical treatment or recovering from an accident will have the benefit of a life saving donation. Why not make it a holiday present to humanity and sign up as a donor this holiday season. |
