There is no doubt about it — today is a very difficult time to be running a service club or organization in Alberta.
Clubs across the province, and likely the country, have found it increasingly difficult to stay afloat, not due to financial reasons, but because of a lack of manpower.
In this day and age, people are busier than ever. Whether it is a second job, working longer hours at a single job or supporting the activities of their children, the modern mother and father have a lot on their collective plates.
Often times, that means there are precious few minutes left for volunteer endeavours.
In other cases, people have simply become unwilling to volunteer for community causes, in favour of closely guarding their free time.
Whatever the situation people are finding themselves in, it has meant many service organizations are dangerously close to folding.
In Vauxhall, the Lions Club and the Royal Canadian Legion are seeking new members.
Last week, the Legion could not even elect a new executive, as not enough people attended to form a quorum.
It is a troubling trend. Such clubs have served Vauxhall well over the years, and many other communities across Canada.
Through fundraising and a host of community projects, clubs have contributed a great deal over the years.
Not only have they produced tangible results, like the Lions Campground north of town for instance, but they have served to bring the community together and developed a sense of togetherness and accomplishment.
In short, it would be a shame to lose even one more service club. To prevent that from happening, new volunteers need to step up.
