The Vauxhall High School Wall of Fame has inducted some very notable individuals over the years. This year was no exception, as two more former VHS grads were honoured at the annual school fundraiser. Vauxhall’s high school and W.R. Myers High School in Taber both have wall of fame ceremonies each year, and they serve a very important purpose. Every year, a new crop of Grade 12 graduates leave the school, and many go on to achieve great things. Of course, not every graduate travels the world, cures a major disease, makes a million dollars or becomes a sports or entertainment celebrity. Often, their contributions are felt on a more local level, as people can impact their communities in many, many different areas. This year’s two inductees prove that, as one was a professional hockey player who did indeed venture far from his roots, while the second inductee returned home to impact her community in many positive ways. Simply put, the Wall of Fame should act to inspire the current generation of VHS students, and convince them they too can achieve greatness. Being from a small town should not hinder anyone from chasing their dreams, as a host of successful VHS grads have displayed. Inspiration can come in many forms for today’s students — parents, teachers, peers can all play a role. However, having a group of people, who grew up in the same town, and graduated from the same school, and went on to fulfill their hopes and dreams, is perhaps the best way to make today’s youth believe anything is possible. With that, if anyone has ideas for 2012 nominees for the VHS Wall of Fame, nominate them. Who knows who will be inspired by their story. |
