With an election sure to be on the horizon in the near future, in the Little Bow riding, candidate Bev Muendel-Atherstone is taking up the banner of the provincial NDP. Muendel-Atherstone has been involved with the NDP for over two decades, and previously worked in the educational field before her retirement. “I’m retired now, but I’ve been a school psychologist with Palliser Regional Schools. I live in Sunset Acres, which is right in Little Bow, directly west of the city of Lethbridge. It’s a tiny little group of homes — it’s not even a hamlet.” Muendel-Atherstone felt compelled to fight against what she considers the corporate domination of the present P.C. government of Premier Alison Redford.

Vauxhall has its New Year’s Baby. Jordan Loewen was born Jan. 12 in Lethbridge, to parents Jake and Tina, right around noon. Jordan weighed in at a healthy six pounds and 12 ounces.

It took just over 700 votes for John Kolk to capture the Little Bow P.C. nomination Saturday night. Kolk took the nomination in the first place ballot count with 720 of the 1411 votes cast. He won five of the six polls across the Little Bow Riding. Henry Doeve, Deputy Reeve for the County of Lethbridge, collected 566 votes while Coaldale Mayor Kim Craig had 127. "The numbers that came out were a little bigger than I expected," said Kolk. "The polls were very busy."

It officially became a three-man race for the Little Bow PC nomination Friday. At the deadline Coaldale Mayor Kim Craig, County of Lethbridge Deputy Reeve Henry Doeve and local agri-businessman John Kolk were the only three seeking the nomination. Long time MLA for Little Bow, Barry McFarland declined to run for the nomination as he is retiring from provincial politics.

An investigation of 10 Tory constituency organizations launched by the province’s chief electoral officer over illegal donations is becoming a political hot potato for Premier Alison Redford’s government. Earlier this month, Progressive Conservative Party president Bill Smith acknowledged the existence of an investigation in a press release on the party’s website. Smith also directed 73 other constituency organizations to conduct an internal review of donations received over the past 36 months. The 10 constituency organizations under investigation were not revealed.
