At its Feb. 22 meeting, Municipal District of Taber council unanimously passed the tender from Brooks Asphalt and Aggregate be accepted at $1,554,815.90 for water line replacement in Enchant.
It is a major project undertaking on the M.D.’s part that will have major impact for Enchant residents. The M.D. of Taber will receive funding under the Canada Infrastructure Stimulus Fund for the project that will be funded under one-third ratios for federal, provincial and municipal government responsibilities.
It would be safe to say no one wants to be in the current predicament of a North-America-wide recession, but when it comes to major capital projects using taxpayer money, it can have its advantages from a cost analysis perspective.
“Original engineering estimates were in the $2.8-2.9 million range,” said Derrick Krizsan, municipal administrator for the M.D. of Taber. “The nice thing is being able to secure that funding from the federal government and the province. This is really the only project in which water distribution is fundable.”
The project calls for replacing 2,000 metres of water-distribution line in the Hamlet of Enchant with six-inch and eight-inch line.
“It will address some of the maintenance issues we’ve had with frequent breaks and also address issues of pressure and future issues of expandability and growth,” said Krizsan. “It’s a great project. It’s a great boon for the community.”
With the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund guidelines, the project must be completed by March 31, 2011 to coincide with the end of the budget year for federal and provincial governments.
