Another Lobsterfest — another record. The 2010 version of the popular event once again topped all others, as it raised a record $47,000, which beat the $43,000 raised in 2009. Brian Schafer, Vauxhall’s fire chief and one of the organizers for Lobsterfest, said the new record exemplifies how much Vauxhall-and-area residents care about the event and the cause it supports — cancer research. “We live in a great community that has always shown support for this event and many other events in Vauxhall. Some people may not come to the event but will contribute in other ways such as prizes, desserts or helping behind the scenes. Our support from outside of the community is also growing rapidly with many extra donations and prizes for the event. We had many donations this year from all over southern Alberta. Our event not only helps our local people who are battling cancer but other southern Albertans as well who would receive treatment at the Lethbridge Cancer Clinic.” Once again, there was not an empty seat in the house for Lobsterfest. “Every year we are amazed and thrilled with the full house — it makes the evening very fun and exciting especially come the live auction time,” said Schafer. “This was the fifth year in a row that the event has sold out.” Tickets were sold for 384 people, and went on sale this year on Dec. 14. They were sold out by mid-January. “It took a bit longer to sell them all this year which is OK,” said Schafer. “It gives people the opportunity to get tickets. Before we introduced the limit of eight, 384 tickets were gone in as little as one hour a couple years ago.” As for the future of the event, Schafer added no big changes are in the planning stages, but added there may be a way for people to get their food a little quicker next year. “We may have something in store next year for the first table to eat after the VIP table eats. People quite often jokingly try to bribe me so they can eat sooner. Although we don't take their money, we may put this idea into our 2011 event.” |
