It will be a little bit of culture shock for students from both Ontario and Enchant this spring. On the March 13 weekend, students from Hamilton, Ont. will arrive in Enchant for an Alberta tour that will last until March 21. Enchant students will head east from May 20-26 to check out another part of the country. Monday night, Enchant hosted a spaghetti supper to raise funds for the student exchange. “We raise money for when the students come here, for the trips we take them on,” said Emely Virostek. The Enchant students will take their big-city counterparts to locations like Banff, Drumheller and Spruce Meadows and the Olympic Park in Calgary. In all, 14 students will head west from Hamilton, and 13 Enchant student will make the trek to Ontario. “When they come here, the whole junior high is involved in the activities,” said Virostek. Things will kick off Sunday, March 14 with a hay ride around Enchant, and Monday will feature a scavenger hunt around the community. The Ontario students will be taken to the Reynolds farm on Wednesday for a branding demonstration, will visit the Jacobson farm to see new lambs being born and will also tour a Hutterite colony. The Ontario students will also participate in a local service project, where they will help build and paint birdhouses to put up at Enchant Park, and will also help with clean-up. This will be the third time Enchant has hosted students. A group from Westport, Ont. were the first to visit, and were followed up by students from the Yukon. Virostek added it is a good experience for both those that visit Enchant and the local students who get to travel the country. “We do it every three years so everyone has the opportunity. In three years, the kids in Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 know they have a chance to go on an exchange.” She added the exchange offers students new experiences they might not otherwise have an opportunity to try. “Some of our kids have never flown before, and some of the kids from the city probably have never been on a farm before.” For the Ontario trip, Virostek is hoping the Enchant students will visit the CN Tower, the Hockey Hall of Fame and Niagara Falls, among other destinations. “It’s such an opportunity to meet other kids in Canada and let them know there is more to the country than this little area.” |
