Thousands of Albertans will be stepping out on Feb. 8 to help maintain a healthy, active lifestyle as part of Winter Walk Day. New for 2012 is a province-wide photo contest to accompany the event. “We have a new photo contest sponsored by AMA. In an attempt to keep more girls in soccer at older age levels, the Taber and District Soccer Association will be doing an experiment for the upcoming 2012 season. The association will be making the U12 category gender specific, dividing it into girls and boys teams.

Enforcement of the new head-contact rule implemented this season from Hockey Canada on down seems to be being implemented to different degrees. Darryl Shimbashi sits in a unique position as far as that perspective goes in he is on the south zone referee council executive. Dustin Gartner is the referee chief locally and Jody Ginther is vice chairman of the south zone referee council, and so there are many eyes of influence here locally for the larger stage of minor hockey across the province.

The novice ‘S’ Sabres were excited to get back to hockey after the New Year. On Sunday, the team played against Bow Island and fell 7-4. Kaden Virostek had the hat trick with Quinn Odland getting a single for Vauxhall. The team will be in Irvine this weekend for a tournament.

It was a packed house at the Vauxhall High School gymnasium as young and old were entertained by the Harlem Crowns who played the Vauxhall Vikings boys basketball team which served as a fundraiser for the squad on Tuesday. “We were really impressed, the crowd was great... we sold over 200 tickets,” said Daryl Johnson, head coach of the Vikings who will be using the fundraiser to offset travel costs for the team at tournaments. “The crowd was really involved and there were so many kids. At half-time, I don’t how many kids were on the floor shooting around.”
