Spring training has started a little early for former Vauxhall Academy of Baseball star and Philadelphia Phillies hopeful Steve Inch. The lanky 6-foot-4 right hander has been doing winter workouts with the academy after he signed on the dotted line with his first-ever contract with the Phillies after he was selected in the sixth round of the Major League Baseball Draft. He will be staying in Vauxhall until Feb. 25 to help stay in shape before he reports to his minor league affiliate with the Phillies. “They were really generous in allowing me to come back and workout for awhile. Hopefully, I can get in some extended spring training,” said Inch. It was a tough decision for Inch to forgo his university playing eligibility as he was primed to pitch for University of Kentucky, but with the business matters now in the rearview mirror, the academy has helped him focus on ball once again. “Getting drafted of course is very exciting and signing with Kentucky still there, I feel I’m happy now and I can focus on actual pitching,” said Inch. “I’ve learned quite a bit. Vauxhall has set me up very well covering a lot of the basics and detailed parts of baseball. A lot of it comes down to work ethic and a little bit of luck and hopefully things work out.” Inch has pitched with the Canadian national junior team and traveled to such locales as the Dominican Republic, Cuba and the United States. For players back here where he took some large steps in becoming a MLB-drafted player, Inch gives some words of advice for current and future recruits. “It comes down to the everyday work. There is the fun stuff, but there’s also the other stuff you’ve got to get done and trust the coaches,” said Inch.
