Vauxhall novice Sabres drew first blood in its Spud League playoff series with Lomond, and earned a 6-2 victory on Sunday.
Ethan Klemen had four goals and an assist. Blake Kondor tallied twice and Owen Kress had three assists. Jacob Portz earned the win in net.
Novice Sabres travel to Lomond on Sunday for game two.
MIDGET: Vauxhall midget Sabres moved on to the second round of league playoffs with two victories over Lethbridge.
Vauxhall started off slowly in its first game at home Friday night and trailed 3-1 with five minutes left in the second period before the Sabres came to life and came away with a 6-4 victory. Branden Martin scored both the first and last goals, along with a pair of assists, in the win. Singles were scored by Thomas Hudson, Jeff Hudson, Josh Senneker and Brett Oseen. Matt Miller earned the hard hat as hardest-working Sabre.
Vauxhall continued on where the team left off Monday night in Lethbridge, and scored three times in the first period and cruised to a convincing 9-1 victory.
Jeff Hudson lit up the score board with three goals and two assists. Brandon Berwick scored twice from the point. Shawn Armstrong, Thomas Hudson, Nathan Frostad and Matt Petek each scored as well. Rusty Howg earned the win in net and Frostad was hardest-working Sabre.
Vauxhall next faces Bow Island starting Saturday on the road with a Sunday home contest at the Vauxhall arena.
ATOM: Vauxhall atom Sabres qualified for ā€œDā€ provincials in Oyen on the March 19 weekend.
The Sabres won its last qualifying game 17-2. Jayden Bexte scored eight goals to go with two assists to lead the way. Kevin Turner sniped six goals and Marshall Enns had a two-goal, three-assist game. Brant Mack had a goal and two assists. Drawing three helpers apiece were Hunter Johnson and Jordan Kuipers. Brody Kester had two assists and Reed Odland and Nicholas Zalik had single assists.
Friday saw the Sabres enter its first round of Spud League playoffs, as Vauxhall dropped its first game 5-4 to Lethbridge Blues. Bexte had two goals to go with an assist. Mack and Zalik each had singles and Odland drew an assist.
Sabres roared back in its second game on Saturday at home and won 5-3 to take the two-game total-point series by a goal. Mack had four goals and Kester had a single. Bexte drew four helpers and Kuipers had two. Johnson, Enns, Zalik and Ethan Klemen all had assists as well. Blaise Unruh was solid in net.
Sabres move on to play the Taber Chiefs in the second round of Spud playoffs with the first game at home Saturday at 1 p.m. Game two is Sunday at 8 a.m. in Taber.
