M.D. council looking at future growth with land purchases

The Municipal District of Taber has announced that they have purchased two properties for use in future projects.

The first property is a 13-acre lot located west of Taber, by Johnson’s Addition.

This lot will be used to develop an onsite communal septic system for the residents of Johnson’s Addition, who have indicated that they want to see the construction of the waste water system and wish for the M.D. to continue to seek funding for the $1.8 million project.

“We haven’t gotten funding for the project yet, but this is the first step, and if and when we get funding, we will be ready to proceed,” said Brian Brewin, reeve for the M.D. “It is something we had to have in order to proceed with this (Johnson’s Addition wastewater project). We had an opportunity to purchase some land that was close to there, so we saw this as a good decision.”

The second property is a 40-acre plot of land to be used as the site for a new municipal maintenance and operations building and, into the future, as the site for other upcoming M.D. facilities.

The location, situated between Barnwell and Taber off a double-lane divided highway with an improved intersection, is large enough to house all municipal operations for the long term.

“We were looking 20, 25 years into the future, and we didn’t feel that there was adequate space, physical area at our current location. This is something we wrestled with a lot, whether or not to stay at our current location or to move somewhere else. But thinking 20 years down the road is what we’re thinking, we just didn’t feel that there was adequate space where we were.”

The M.D. is currently going through the process of dividing this parcel up into subdivisions, and consultations with neighbouring property owners will begin in February by the development hearing process, including the legislated requirements necessary for subdivision notification.

They plan on developing this property through until 2017, but council does not currently have a timeline for the extent for facility construction. Eventually, all of the M.D.’s facilities will be out there, including council.

“Right now, it is certainly just going to be a public work facility. Over time, obviously, that is going to be what our goal is; to move everything out there. But right now, it’s just down to phase one, and that is putting our new shop out there.”

Upon completion, the M.D. will be selling its current existing shops and properties that lie within Taber.
