Borrowing from Peter to pay Paul isn’t necessarily a desirable outcome, especially when the 2013 Provincial Budget is concerned but the Alberta government is borrowing over $6 billion for infrastructure funds to build hospitals, schools and roads without any new or increased taxes. Last week, the dreaded provincial budget was released with the announcement of the province’s borrowing plans. Operation spending will not be increasing but the provincial government anticipates a $2 billion deficit on revenues of over $38 billion. Apparently, the government’s Contingency Account will cover the gap. So what does the 2013 Provincial Budget mean to the Municipal District of Taber?

Using integrated investigative strategies, the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP have solved a series of break and enters that have occurred in the Town of Vauxhall over the past two months. On March 7, 2013 at approximately 1 a.m. members of the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP responded to a complaint of a break and enter in progress at the Bottle Depot in Vauxhall. When members arrived they discovered the suspects had gained entry into the Bottle Depot and had subsequently left the area.

Across Alberta, 42 elementary schools showed significant improvement in their academic performance over the past five years, according to the Fraser Institute’s annual school rankings. Among these improving elementary schools are public, private, separate, francophone, and charter. The report card also includes important information about each school’s make-up, including parents’ average income, the percentage of ESL students, and the percentage of special needs students.

Vauxhall and the M.D. of Taber airports will continue to fly high as both aviation hubs will be injected with a little government spending fuel, surely to keep lift off and landing of local planes safe with upgrades to infrastructure. Yesterday, Medicine Hat MP LaVar Payne, on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, minister of state for western economic diversification, announced support for upgrades to the Taber and Vauxhall airports under the federal government’s Community Infrastructure Improvement Fund (CIIF).

Rules of engagement, baseball etiquette, competitive spirit, call it whatever you will. But there always seems to be something electric in the air when it comes to Canada and Mexico in international baseball competition. The bench-clearing brawl that occurred between Canada and Mexico during the World Baseball Classic (WBC) on Saturday in Phoenix made international news, and former Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Jets player Jay Johnson was front and centre in it defending his teammates.
