Canada Day celebrations in the community this year went smoothly and citizens were able to enjoy the numerous events held throughout the day without mishap. “As far as I know, there was no incidences of anything happening,” said Jennifer Crowson, president of the Vauxhall Ag Society. “We had fun — it was all good.” The community’s largest drawing point on the day was again the demolition derby, back after a hiatus for the second year running. The mainstays of the VBS breakfast, the parade, community supper, fireworks and other events, also drew out locals and visitors alike. Crowson is hoping to review the day’s events with the various participants to gauge where improvements might be made. “I’m hoping to have a meeting with all the groups that came, just to touch base and see how their day went, because there was that hit, run, throw competition at the ball diamond, and then there was the game, as well as the church supper and the pancake breakfast. I’d like to get together with those people and get a tally of how everybody did as far as funds raised, or to see what we can change, or make things better for next year, that kind of thing.” Attendance was strong, but likely down slightly from last year’s numbers, according to Crowson. “I think they were probably down a little bit from last year, only because there was a big funeral the same day, and I know a lot of the people were going to that. But otherwise it was a really good crowd, we figured it was well over 2,000 people.” The Ag Society’s T-shirt sales were a new feature, added Crowson. “I think we sold just over half of what we ordered, and we ordered 500. So, that’s still a lot of shirts.” Still unclear is whether the event location will be changing for next year’s celebratory events sponsored by the Vauxhall Ag Society, as residential lot development of the present property may be going forward. “I’m not really sure yet. They’ve (town council) said that we’ll know in six months whether we’ll be able to use it, as opposed to them giving us a no right now. We’ll see what happens,” said Crowson. Crowson is pleased overall with how the day’s events played out. “It was a really successful day as far as I’m concerned. It was really great — the weather was great, there was a good turnout. We had a great group of guys who came out to participate. We had guys from Milo, Vulcan, Coaldale — there was a wide range of guys, a lot of local guys this year as well. It was just a really good turnout.” PARADE RESULTS: Commercial Floats 1st Corona Hotel 2nd Legion 3rd 4-H Circle V Multi Club Honourable Mention Retlaw 4-H Reyno’s Contracting Commercial Cars 1st Napa Auto Parts and Agristar 2nd YPM and Wendy’s Dairy Bar 3rd Grantham Oilfield Maintenance Honourable Mention Shell DEMOLITION DERBY RESULTS Large Car 1st Duane Mills 2nd Shaun Umscheid 3rd Bryce Metzger 4th Brody Lanser Small Car 1st Deeds Peters 2nd Peter Neufeld 3rd Jake Peters. |
