With a municipal election in the offing this fall, town councillors, M.D. councillors and school board trustees are all preparing for the moment of truth on Oct. 18 when people cast their votes.
The current chair of Horizon School Board, Marie Logan, has already decided to run as the incumbent for the Ward 1 trustee position, representing the Lomond/Enchant area of the division.
“Unless I have a major mind-change between now and then, but at the moment I am.”
Logan has been a bulwark on the board for the past 16 years, and has striven to deal with the many issues that can be faced by a rural school division.
“I’ve always wanted the children and students in the area to get the best possible education. Lately, it’s been the issues on government funding that’s been a challenge to deal with. But basically for me it’s just to see that the students get the best possible education.”
Getting involved in the political game wasn’t a hard choice for Logan.
“Our school here had been up for a closure, and I’d been on the group that had worked for it. And then when we amalgamated it stayed open, and the community basically said ‘Do you want to run for trustee?’”
Becoming a teacher wasn’t an avenue that Logan pursued in her life, but her family ties run deep in the field.
“I’ve always had a keen interest in education. Everybody in my family has been a teacher. My grandmother always said I’m a black sheep, because I have a Bachelor of Science, I’m not a teacher,” said Logan.
“But when I got mixed up with the school board, they all said we knew you’d get involved with it somehow.”
