The Vikings will feature lone senior Jesse Borden to go with six Grade 11s and three Grade 10s.
“I like where our team is at. I have more returning players than I usually have. Usually I have just a couple, but this year I have more that have played for me before,” said Daryl Johnson, head coach of the Vauxhall Vikings boys basketball team. “I think we will be a little more balanced than we were last year. Last year we really relied on our shooting a lot from the three-point line and just inside. This year I think we’ll be able to get it into the post a lot more than we did last year.”
However the more balanced Vikings will fare this year, it will be senior Borden who will be providing the leadership.
“He will definitely be the leader on the team with how he works in practice and how hard he pushes the other guys,” said Johnson. “He sets the tone in practice and games.”
The Vikings are on the road on Monday against Milk River but have home contests on Dec. 11 against Grassy Lake and Dec. 16 against St. Mary’s Celtics from Taber.
Home games start at 6 p.m. for the Vauxhall Queens girls basketball team with the Vikings boys basketball team to follow at approximately 7:45 p.m.
Prior to River Ridge play the Vikings are off to a tournament in Stirling this weekend.
“I like what I’ve been seeing in practice. Our first game of the year is against Picture Butte so that will be a good measuring stick to see where we are at,” said Johnson.
