Vauxhall Vikings boys basketball team begin its trek to March Madness, the high school version this weekend with the team’s first tournament of the season in Stirling.

Transitioning from the volleyball season, the team will have managed five practices on the hardcourt before tournament play.

“I have four Grade 12s, a couple of Grade 11s and a bunch of Grade 10s, so it’s a pretty good mix,” said Daryl Johnson, head coach of the Vauxhall Vikings boys basketball team. “I think we will be pretty well balanced. We are not quite a big as we were last year size wise, but I think we are a little more skilled across the board from the guards on up. I won’t know totally until I see the team at game speed. But I’m excited for this group, the way they have been working in practice, they will be ready for the tournament.”

The Vikings play Calgary Christian in its first game of the season at the tournament in Stirling this weekend.

“There’s going to be some other good teams there too in Edmonton Christian and Immanuel Christian too,” said Johnson. “We have a strong pool and it’s good to face strong teams this early in the year to see where you need to go.”

Vauxhall Vikings start its River Ridge Basketball League play on Dec. 9 in Bow Island. Vauxhall will be hosting River Ridge playoffs this year.
