VAB Jets triumphant at annual PBA tournament over weekend

The Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Jets had a succesful weekend with a series of victories to take the second annual PBA Tournament.

On April 27, the Jets found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning before scoring seven in the 2nd and eight in the 3rd to cruise to a 19-1 victory over the Parkland Twins. Garrett Hawkings started on the mound going five innings allowing two hits, one run with zero BB’s and nine K’s to earn the Booster Juice Player of the Game Award. Offensively, the Jets managed 14 spread out over seven players. Dayton Peters was one for three with a double and an RBI. Ty Penner was two for four with two RBI’s.

Owen Harms was two for four with an RBI. Cooper Jones was three for five with a double and five RBI’s. Brett Mercier was three for five with a double and three RBI’s. Jared Binsfeld was two for three with two RBI’s. Kaiden Cardoso was one for three with a triple and two RBI’s to round out the offence.

The Jets continued their winning ways with a 11-0 victory over the Saskatoon Cubs on April 28. Zach Newman started on the mound and was in control the entire way going seven innings allowing five hits with five K’s and zero BB’s to earn the Booster Juice Player of the Game. Offensively, the Jets were led by Liam Vulcano who was two for three with a triple and an RBI. Owen Harms was two for three with an RBI. Cooper Jones was three for four with two RBI’s. Jared Binsfeld was one for three with an RBI. Brett Mercier was one for four with two RBI’s. Matt Gough was one for one with a double and Ty Penner rounded out the offence going one for two with an RBI.

On April 30, the offence came alive in the semi-final versus Saskatoon DBacks, winning 12 – 2 and then coming from behind in dramatic fashion in the finals scoring two runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to walk off 4-3 over a very good Calgary Jr. Dino’s 4-3 in the final.

The semi-final saw the Jets go down 2-0 after one inning before Adam Macko threw four scoreless innings enroute to a 12-2 victory. Macko threw five innings allowing four hits, two runs, one earned run with one BB and eight K’s.

Offensively, the Jets were led by Owen Harms who was two for three with a double. Brett Mercier had a huge day going two for three with a grand slam and five RBI’s. Jared Binsfeld was two for three with two RBI’s. Cooper Jones was two for three with two RBI’s. Dayton Peters was two for three with two RBI’s. Ty Penner was two for three with a double and an RBI. Kaiden Cardoso rounded out the offence going one for three with a double and an RBI to round out the offence.

The victory put the Jets in the final versus a good Calgary Jr. Dino’s team. The Jets led 2-0 after four innings before the Jr. Dino’s scored three and led 3-2 with two outs in the 7th inning. Liam Vulcano hit a deep fly ball to centre that went off the outfielders glove to put a runner on 2nd.

Brett Mercier laced a ball to right field to tie up the game and a ground ball to short that took a tough hop helped the Jets walk off for the second straight year becoming the PBA Tournament champions. Ben Erwin was great going seven innings allowing six hits, three unearned runs with one BB and five K’s.

Offensively the Jets were led by Owen Harms who was one for four. Brett Mercier had a great day going two for four with a double and two RBI’s including the game winner. Ty Penner rounded out the offence going one for four. The Jets played the tournament five Team Canada players down as well as playing six games in three days to win the championship.
