Local wrestlers were much like their Olympic athlete brethren on the weekend, as they competed for medals.
The wrestlers competed at the University of Lethbridge at the Rural Provincial Championships on the weekend.
For Vauxhall high, rookie wrestler Keagan Jans placed fourth out of nine in the 59-kilogram category and single handedly earned three team points for his school.
Jans faced Woong-Sup Jung of Taber’s W.R. Myers in the bronze bout. Jans and Jung put on a nail-biting crowd-pleaser because they often spar together in practice and know what to expect from each other on the mat.
Jans ended up fourth out of nine wrestlers in his category. He lost to Jay Welsh of Wetaskiwin, who went on to win the gold medal. Jans then got a bye and pinned Bradley Staple from Our Lady of Snow in the first round. Jans next was to face Daniel Schenk of Canmore, but Schenk had to forfeit because of an injury. In an exhibition match with Josh Williamson of Our Lady of Snow, Jans pinned Williamson with a textbook nearside cradle. That advanced Jans to the bronze-medal round.
