Vauxhall peewee baseball Jets will be flying into provincials later this month with plenty of power in its engines after a solid 2-1 playdown this past weekend. Splitting time between Hiesler and Bawlf, the Jets kicked off its round-off with a 19-9 loss to Coronation. “They are a pretty good all around team,” said Rob Doerksen, a coach with the peewee Jets, on a Coronation team who will likely qualify for Tier I community peewee provincials. “They had a couple of big innings right away on us at the beginning of the game and that sort of deflated us a bit.” Lane Doerksen, Riley Martin and Jackson Ironside combined pitching efforts on the mound. Austin Wickenheiser and Nathan Mcllwraith both went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Tanner Tymko went 2-for-2. Jets quickly bounced back against Hiesler with a 20-4 drubbing. “They are a little weaker team and our bats really came alive and the pitching was solid,” said Doerksen. “We got some more hits down the line that game, more than the first game.” Brayden Wolosuk lasted for 5 1/3 solid innings on the mound, while Wickenheiser came on in relief. Wolosuk helped his own pitching cause with his bat as he went 3-for-3. Tymko and Travis Green were both 2-for-3 at the plate. The Jets went to Bawlf for Sunday morning and finished off the hosts 12-2 in five innings. Tymko pitched a complete-game gem, and needed only 59 pitches over five innings, with 47 of those pitches going for strikes. “He dominated that game,” said Doerksen of his pitcher’s efficiency with his pitch count. Lane Doerksen and Ironside were both 2-for-2 in the game at the plate. Mcllwraith was 2-for-3. It all amounts to the Jets hitting an altitude of a 3-3 record after two weeks of playdowns heading into provincials the July 24 weekend. The site is still to be determined, as Vauxhall has put in a bid to be host. With the 3-3 record, the team will likely be slated into Tier II provincials. “We’ve been up and down with our good games and our bad games. If the kids come out and hit we can dominate,” said Doerksen. “Our pitching has been really good all the time. Our hitting has been our downfall for a bit. If we hit we’ll be all right keeping us in there.” The peewee Jets are comprised of players from Vauxhall, Hays, Brooks and Lomond. |
