“First game we blew out Picture Butte where they are weaker than they have been in the past. Then we played Calgary Christian where we lost by 10, it was a good game being up at half-time. It was close all the way up until the last two minutes,” said Daryl Johnson, head coach of the Vauxhall Vikings boys basketball team. “On Saturday we lost to Stirling where their fast break they just went to work on us. It was good team basketball by them and we were baffled by what they were doing where we weren’t quite ready for them. This is their year for sure, they’ve had the group together for awhile now.”
The Vikings were scheduled to host Grassy Lake yesterday with results unavailable at press time. Monday’s contest against Milk River on the road was canceled due to weather. The team travels this weekend to Picture Butte for a tournament.
“The biggest thing about our first tournament was to see what we have. I have some new guys and you have to see where they are comfortable. Now we definitely know what we can do and where we need to improve,” said Johnson. “It was a strange tournament where we had a blow out, a close game and then getting blown out. Usually it doesn’t go like that where we got all ends of winning and losing. It was good to see how the kids took it where practising just (Tuesday) the kids were talking about what they did wrong and they are looking to improve. They learned from it.”
