“It’s one of those years where it rounds up going on for a long time since the 1950s and we’ve been going every year since then,” said Darren Skretting, a co-organizer of the Vauxhall Farmer’s 60th Annual Curling Bonspiel.
“The community has changed but we’d like to keep it going as a community event for at least one more year.”
A band has been hired for the 60th anniversary of the bonspiel, which Skretting is encouraging the community to attend, curlers and non-curlers alike, on the conclusion of the bonspiel on Feb. 1 on Saturday night.
The bonspiel over the years has peaked at 48 teams and it now hovers around 24.
“We have some rinks from Taber and some from Brooks,” said Skretting.“The ones that come usually come every year which is a good thing showing how much they enjoy coming to the event.”
The bonspiel will be a four-event format that will also feature a night auction on the Thursday of the bonspiel’s run.
“This might be the last one where we have the current format with the community dance so we encourage everyone to come and have a good time,” said Skretting.
People can still register teams or individuals for the bonspiel can call Jake Unruh at 403-654-2830.
