Posted on September 30, 2024 by Britanny Burr

Autumn signals the end of summer and the dreaded shorter, colder days ahead. We get that the pending doom can make it pretty hard to enjoy, but Ebenezer Scrooge himself couldn’t even hate Fall in Alberta because it’s just so beautiful. As the crisp air rolls in and the leaves turn glorious shades of gold, red, purple, and orange, it’s the perfect time to throw on your coziest sweater, grab your favourite fall drink, and hit the road for a weekend getaway or day trip. With so many cute places to visit, it’s hard to narrow down a list of the cutest and most Gilmore Girls-esque.

Alberta’s small towns come alive in the fall. They’re full of charm, local culture, and picture-perfect views, making them must-visit spots while the fall colours put on their grand show. Here’s a list of tiny towns you won’t want to miss this fall. Whether you’re on the hunt for the perfect pumpkin, looking for Insta-worthy photo ops, or taking a stroll through gorgeous tree-lined streets, there is no shortage of fun activities.

Waterton

Nestled in the Rocky Mountains of southern Alberta, Waterton is a stunning little gem where fall transforms the landscape into an artist or adventurer’s dream. The town is quiet this time of year, giving you more room to explore and enjoy the mountain air. Go for a scenic drive to Cameron Lake, just a short distance from the townsite, where the fall foliage pops against the dramatic backdrop of the Rockies. Don’t forget the camera. Blakiston Falls (Red Rock Canyon) is an impressive waterfall and is the perfect photo opportunity for those fiery autumn hues. Treat yourself to a night (or two) for a weekend adventure at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Its beauty will take your breath away.

Twin Butte

Just a short drive from Waterton, Twin Butte is a tiny town that’s easy to miss if you don’t know it. Trust us, you want to make the stop. It’s the kind of place with a big, friendly personality. Visit the Twin Butte General Store, where you can warm up with mouthwatering Mexican Cuisine and catch live music on select afternoons and evenings. The landscape around Twin Butte lights up with golden fields and mountain views, so take a slow drive and soak in the views or hike on one of the nearby trails. It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy some peaceful fall scenery.

Vegreville

Vegreville might be most famous for its giant pysanka (Easter Egg), but it’s also the cutest fall destination worth checking out. With the colourful leaves surrounding the famous egg, it’s a fun stop for fall photo ops. The town also hosts plenty of small-town events in autumn, including fall markets and local fairs, giving you a taste of the community’s spirit. Walk through town, admire the historic buildings, and enjoy a peaceful fall day with a mix of Ukrainian culture and prairie scenery.

Diamond Valley

Hidden in the foothills southwest of Calgary, Diamond Valley is the perfect place to visit for those looking for a scenic road trip. Rolling foothills surround the town, and the trees are brightly coloured in September and October.
