The Municipal District of Taber council is looking at extending their enhanced policing agreement with the RCMP.

During their regular meeting on Feb. 10, council tabled a copy of the three-year extension agreement until their regular meeting in March. They also passed a motion to set up a meeting with the RCMP at the upcoming Alberta Association of Municipal Districts and Counties to discuss the issue further.

Currently, the M.D. employs Cst. Tamara Dreaddy of the Taber/Vauxhall RCMP in an enhanced officer position.

The current contract for the position was signed for April 1, 2012 and will expire March 31, 2015. The extension would see the position retained until at least March 31, 2018.

Enhanced police positions are put in place in order to ensure additional coverage for the area. The officers work closely with bylaw or community peace officers as well as take part in standard policing initiatives and investigations.

The projected rate for the enhanced officer position for 2015/2016 is $155,000.
