Think twice before venturing on ice: MD of Taber

Posted on January 15, 2026 by Vauxhall Advance

MD of Taber

Recent reports have noted people spotted on the Oldman River near the MD of Taber Municipal Park. Walking on thin ice isn’t just an expression — river ice is unsafe for walking, skating, or riding.

With the recent cycles of freezing and thawing, ice conditions can change quickly and become unpredictable. Ice that appears solid may be thin or weakened, especially in areas with moving water such as rivers, streams, and culverts.

WHAT TO KNOW:

• Ice over moving water is never considered safe. Currents erode ice from below, even during cold weather.

• Freeze–thaw cycles weaken ice, creating hidden cracks and soft spots.

• Snow-covered ice can be especially dangerous, as it hides thin areas and open water.

• Ice thickness can vary greatly within a short distance—one step can make a difference.

FOR YOUR SAFETY:

• Avoid walking, skating, or riding on river ice.

• Keep children and pets well away from ice-covered waterways.

• Never assume ice is safe based on appearance alone.

• If you see someone fall through the ice, call emergency services immediately—do not attempt a rescue yourself.

Please use caution around all bodies of water this season and help keep our community safe by staying off the ice. For more information, visit: https://www.lifesaving.org/…/water…/ice-safety-tips
