Wildrose: Wildrose would scrap mandatory school fees

A Wildrose government would put an end to the nickel-and-diming of parents every September by scrapping mandatory school fees in all public, Catholic, and public charter schools, Wildrose Leader Brian Jean announced today.
“There shouldn’t be a surcharge on public education. No parent should have to take out their chequebook to have their kid be a part of math or language arts,” Jean said. “While the Prentice PCs are raising everyone’s taxes 59 times, the Wildrose is focused on making life more affordable for families in practical and meaningful ways.”
The fees average about $100 per student per year, and can quickly escalate to over $1000 for many families. Wildrose would only scrap fees only directly associated with participating in mandatory classes for students.
The commitment is part of Standing Up for Albertans: Wildrose’s Five Priorities, and would ensure school boards would still receive the necessary funding to meet the needs of our classrooms.
“The Prentice PCs have spent too much, borrowed too much and continue to look for hidden taxes and fees to make Albertans pay. We need to make sure as much money as possible is staying in Mom and Dad’s pocket,” Jean said. “Our Wildrose plan is about making life more affordable for families, scrapping the Prentice PC tax hikes and presenting a balanced plan to shrink the size of government.”
On May 5, Albertans have an important choice to make: a vote for higher taxes, higher spending and less services, or a vote for the Wildrose – a party dedicated to no tax increases, and a positive vision for jobs, growth and prosperity. The only way to stop your taxes from going up is to vote Wildrose.
