The Vauxhall Cemetery cleanup on May 16 was a cool windy day, but certainly an improvement from last year when we had to contend with rain and wind. The Vauxhall Cemetery Committee would like to thank the members of the Retlaw 4-H Club and Hays 4-H Club along with some high school kids, and both past and new members of the Vauxhall Cemetery Committee who pitched in and did an awesome job of cleanup.

A special thank you to Brandon Loewen for supplying and driving a backhoe for filling in ruts made by equipment. Some of the members and parents also filled in ruts using a wheelbarrow. We are proud of all the hard work everyone put forth. Thank you to Karen Phillips for once again watering trees, and to Ron Friesen for barbecuing up a delicious bunch of hotdogs. Also to Shirley, Donna and Lien for the cookies and squares. They went well with the donuts. Warren-Porter Agency supplied the water. The lunch was very welcomed after a blustery workout.

One major disappointment was discovered, as during the digging of a gravesite no protective pad was used, and damage was done to the cement, also deep ruts over gravesites. These rows of cement are expensive and put in place for the headstones, not for equipment to drive on or to use as an anchor. We all hope that in the future, respect will be shown when operating equipment.

Also disappointing was that deer ate and/or rubbed off the bark on quite a number of trees. This is sad, but unfortunately deer don’t know better. A protective sheath will have to be put up around each tree.

Do you have a loved one in the Vauxhall Cemetery or want to make a difference? The committee is in need of volunteers to help out with its Casino on July 26-27 and would like to thank all those of you who have volunteered already.

All the Casino money goes back into the beautification and care of the Vauxhall Cemetery. The next meeting is being held today at 7 p.m. in the Vauxhall Public Library.
