With the majority of summer heat behind southern Alberta, the Municipal District of Taber has decided to cancel their fire ban and implement a fire restriction. During a special meeting called on Sept. 27, M.D. administration updated council on what they’re seeing out in the municipality as September was near its end.

“This item is being brought forward to council with respect to discussing the fire ban status and Chief (Nathan) Cote can speak to it in more detail, or alternatively, answer any questions council has on the topic,” said CAO Arlos Crofts.

With the ban on since mid-August, temperatures and conditions have changed quite a bit as the municipality geared up for October. And with cooler weather approaching, the M.D. Regional Fire Department sees conditions favourable to downgrade the ban.

“We’ve had a fire ban on for a period of time, since August 19. It seems as though some conditions are changing out there and we’re getting a little bit cooler weather. The dew is sticking around a little later in the day for us, and some of the hazard levels or the amount of hazard with crops coming off is reducing, so maybe it’s time for us to consider reducing our full fire ban back to a fire restriction or advisory, whatever you guys think,” explained Cote.
