Vauxhall council received updates regarding several town projects and repair projects.

During their regular June 2 meeting, Vauxhall town council reviewed the written CAO report.

In the report, it said that contractors will be closing the east portion of 7th Avenue North to complete work for the Sanitary Upgrades project. When asked if it was fixing the road, mayor Kimberly Cawley said she believed they were finishing the opening to tie in the sanitary lines. When asked if they were also working on tying in water lines, assistant CAO and town office manager Mindy Dunphy said she believed so, and it would take about six weeks to complete.

The town’s public work staff have completed their work in the new town office building, with fascia and roof work expected to be completed that week. According to the report, basic service connections will be going in next, followed by town staff moving in and file moving. Due to the move, the town office will be closed for a few days to accommodate the process. When asked if they have a move-in date, Dunphy said that signage would need to go up, which will take two to three weeks, but she didn’t know when the telephone lines will be going in.

“I don’t know if the staff will be in there, if you still want to do your grand opening, because we don’t know when telephones will be installed, and that will be a big thing,” said Dunphy. “Telus would have to go over and look at the wiring and decide what to do.”

“Basically, I think the last big thing is telephones.”

Internet is currently hooked up in the new building. The connection system for the phones isn’t expected to be hard to do, but no one had contacted Telus yet. Dunphy said they weren’t able to connect with Telus early that day, but would continue trying. However, because they don’t have a timeline yet for telephones, she couldn’t say for sure when they could move into the building.

Coun. Shelley Deleeuw noted that “you have to have phones” for a town office. Cawley noted that the switch for residential telephone lines was very simple.

Coun. Russell Norris also complimented the sliding door that was put in for the town office, calling it “fantastic” and “it makes the whole building”.

Not included in the report, but discussed during the item of the agenda, were repairs to the town’s swimming pool due to issues with a leaky liner. Dunphy said that the pool repairs would push the opening of the pool from that Friday to at least the following week.
