The following are selected briefs from the regular July 21 meeting of Vauxhall town council.

Agenda Additions

The agenda for the July 21 meeting was approved with two additions: and airport update (5d) and a request for decision regarding the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball (5e).

Taber Regional Economic Development Collaboration

A delegation consisting of Peter Casurella, executive director of Southgrow Regional Economic Development, and Bryce Surina, director of community services for the Municipal District of Taber, gave a presentation on the Taber Regional Economic Development Collaboration. Last year, the Town of Taber and the M.D. of Taber had created a joint strategy plan for the economic development plan, and the partnership quickly developed a broader scope. Surina said that while they didn’t have all the answers today, said “In principle, the idea would be to move forward with a partnership in economic development, a regional economic development partnership.”

CAO Report

During his verbal report, town CAO Cris Burns, in addition to arena project updates, informed council they needed to replace the air conditioner and replace some windows in the new administrative building to improve air flow and make the office more comfortable. They are currently waiting on quotes for the AC. While a motion wasn’t needed, Burns wanted to inform council because of the changes needed.

Aspen Films

Council viewed a sample promotional video for another municipality, and discussed the use of drone footage in the video and how to best utilize it.

Airport Update

Coun. Russell Norris said the Vauxhall airport is seeking a grant to lengthen and expand the runway. A bigger runway would allow bigger planes to land there, which would be beneficial for emergencies.

Vauxhall Academy of Baseball

Council passed motions to include the cost of electrical, water, heating, and infrastructure connections to be part of the $200,000 donation council is making to the VAB, and to approve the use of the land for the academy.

Closed Session

Following closed session, council passed two motions in regard to a multi-purpose facility:

• To approve the use of the parcel of land located at 417– 4th Street N. NW corner of Vauxhall Recreation Complex to build a community indoor training facility.

• To approve the Town in securing utilities for the facility, including electricity, water, heating, and necessary infrastructure to support the daily operations of the community indoor training facility to be part of the $200,000 commitment.
