The Town of Vauxhall will officially be funding the training of local lifeguards working at the town pool.

During their regular Feb. 2 meeting, Vauxhall town council discussed a proposed policy for providing finance aid for town lifeguards.

The policy, the Vauxhall Pool New Hire Incentive Plan, would allow the town to reimburse the training costs for local lifeguards. To be eligible for the reimbursement, the applicant must be at least 16 years old, live within town boundaries, and be employed at the Town of Vauxhall Outdoor Pool for a minimum of 24 hour a week. Returning lifeguards would also be eligible. Reimbursement would be capped at $500, and be applicable for either the bronze medallion, bronze cross, national lifeguard certification, or standard first aid (CPR-C and AED) courses.

Assistant CAO and town manager Mindy Dunphy said the document before council didn’t need to be passed that night, but administration was looking for “guidance” on what council would like to see, such as capping the number of applicants. The number of lifeguards at the pool can be as high as 12, with junior lifeguards being paired with a senior lifeguard for a shift.

Mayor Kim Cawley noted they want to be careful they don’t “load up” too much with junior lifeguards, suggesting they cap it at four applicants, but include a caveat that as long as there were enough senior lifeguards, they could allow more at their discretion.

Council approved the policy as amended.
