Taber town council received two requests from the Taber Shooting Foundation (TSF), which were addressed at the June 8 regular meeting of council. The Foundation asked the council to have a member appointed to its executive team and to make a donation. In the correspondence sent to the administration, TSF noted that other donors have given anywhere from $500 to $10,000 and that the MD of Taber donated $2,500. The MD has already appointed a representative to the TSF executive group.

The meeting agenda said that TSF was “looking for supports to donate to a new facility. The Shooter’s Hall will be the focal point of the range.” Technically, Shooter’s Hall has already been completed and gives groups a building to meet with supporters, shooters and students.

However, “The building has been planned for years and even though it is complete we would like to improve the area outside. We hope to count on you for your support. Supporters/donators will be displayed on the outside of our new building for recognition,” a letter from TSF said.

Last summer, the range hosted the International Practical Shooting Confederation (IPSC) nationals and had over 450 competitors from across Canada who attended over the two-week long event.

At that time, local outdoorsman and retired school teacher Allen Herbst described the role the range plays in the local scene. He said, “Shooting sports, just in general, are very much a part of the recreation in this area and deserve some attention.”

Town council had no reservations about supporting the TSF and Coun. Dan Remfert immediately offered to volunteer for the role with the Foundation’s executive. Council refrained from immediately making or passing that motion due to its position on the voting status of councillors on local boards. In addition, TSF has to vote-in any new executive member.

A similar situation occurred last year with Safe Haven Women’s Shelter, which requested a council appointee to its own board. At that time, council held off until it could confirm that the appointed council member would in fact have voting status on the board. At the recent June 8 meeting, council again wanted to confirm that point before committing.

Coun. Remfert said he thought matching the MD’s $2,500 donation was a good idea. “It’s a pretty high-end thing out there, it is world class,” he said. Council voted all in favour of the donation and the administration will follow-up with the possibility of having Remfert appointed to the TSF executive.
