In the near future, the Municipal District of Taber will be a destination for disc golfers.
After talks have continued to grow around constructing a new nine-hole disc golf course down near the M.D. Park, things are certainly moving in the right direction. During council’s regular meeting, Willy Friesen was back in council chambers to provide an update on where he and administration were at in regards to moving forward. On June 16, M.D. administration and the disc golf group met at the site of the proposed course and the group provided a map depicting approximately where the nine-hole course would be located on the property, as well as some additional information as requested by the M.D. on the development and operation of the course.
“We did meet down on the site a week and a half or two weeks again, and I asked Mr. Friesen to provide a little bit more information about how they managed to do the maintenance and installation of the baskets and then run the public disc golf kits for folks that don’t have them. He answered all of my questions sufficiently, I believe. He provided a map outline how the configuration of the nine-hole course,” explained Brian Peers, director of Municipal Lands and Leases.
“I went and scouted the area and I actually don’t have to remove any live trees. There are natural fairways that I found. If we were to be allowed to remove some of the dead trees that are standing, that would be sufficient enough to make a really fun nine-hole disc golf course,” added Friesen.
With the disc golf group and Town of Taber earning a grant for baskets and some disc golf rentals, one question council had was where people would then be able to rent discs when going down to the course.
“One suggestion was to make your rental ones available at the library?” asked Reeve Merrill Harris.
