ASIRT investigating after Brooks man shot and killed by RCMP officer

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer in Brooks shot and killed a man during an attempt to arrest him.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says the shooting happened on July 15 at about 4:15 p.m. Brooks RCMP officers responded to a home to arrest a man who they say was tied to a break and enter reported earlier that day.

Another person answered the door and told officers the man was inside, ASIRT says. The officers waited outside for a few minutes, then were invited in.

The man came from the back of the home, saw the officers and left through a side door, according to ASIRT. He ran toward a nearby alley, one officer followed.

In the alley, the officer told the man to drop a knife he was holding, ASIRT says. The man ran toward the officer who then fired his gun and struck the man.

Officers gave first aid until paramedics arrived, the man died at the scene. Investigators later found two knives, ASIRT says. No officers were hurt.

The home was in Greenbrook Village, a mobile home neighbourhood in Brooks.

The Police Review Commission directed ASIRT to handle the case as a “Level 1” matter. Under the Police Act, Level 1 matters include cases of death, serious injury or serious concerns about an officer’s actions. ASIRT says the investigation will focus on the use of force and how the man died.

ASIRT is part of the Police Review Commission, an independent civilian led agency that launched in December 2025 to oversee police complaints across Alberta.

The RCMP says it, “believes in accountability and transparency” and would fully support the ASIRT investigation. The RCMP is also doing its own internal review. ASIRT has not released the man’s name.
