The Vauxhall Ag Society Grounds will play host to a free Alberta High School Rodeo Association Rodeo event from Sept. 18-20.

“The Vauxhall Ag Society was approached by the Alberta High School Rodeo Association about hosting one of their events,” said Brandi Doerksen of the Vauxhall Agricultural Society. “We thought it was a great opportunity to showcase our facilities and bring this type of event to Vauxhall. Spectators will be able to watch young athletes compete in a variety of rodeo & shooting events throughout the weekend. It’s a great opportunity to come out, watch the competition and support the young athletes.”

Doersken noted that events on Friday, September 18, the Junior High events begin at 3:00 p.m. and will run until late.  Events on Saturday, September 19, Doerksen went on, will be Senior High events that are set begin at 1:00 p.m. and will include Bareback Riding, Saddle Bronc, Bull Riding, Pole Bending, Tie-Down Roping, Breakaway Roping, Steer Wrestling, Goat Tying, and Barrel Racing

Events on Sunday, September 20, Doerksen explained, will also be Senior High events that are expected to begin at 10 a.m., wrap around 2 p.m., and include Pole Bending, Tie-Down Roping, Breakaway Roping, Steer Wrestling, Goat Tying, Team Roping, and Barrel Racing.

“The Alberta High School Rodeo Association (AHSRA) is a provincial organization that provides youth with an opportunity to compete in rodeo while developing leadership, sportsmanship and mentorship skills,” Doerksen noted.

Since 1972, Doerksen explained, the Alberta High School Rodeo Association has been supporting youth development through the sport of rodeo in Alberta since 1972, and with more than 700 members across three districts, the organization provides rodeo opportunities throughout the province for both Junior High and High School members. The Alberta High School Rodeo Association, Doerksen added, operates as three districts within the province for both the High School and Junior High divisions, and contestants can choose which district they compete in. Each district has its own executive director who sits on the provincial board, Doerksen says, and year-end prizes are awarded within each district, with approximately 10–12 contestants from each district qualifying for the provincial finals.

In addition to the rodeo, Doerksen also explained, the Vauxhall event will have food vendors on site, including Cisco’s Gourmet Dogs, ShakaMan Fire & Frost, and the Kiwanis Club of Gas City and the entire event is being funded by the Vauxhall Ag Society with the Ag Society also reaching out to the local businesses, organizations and families for donations and support to help cover the costs associated with hosting the event.

“We’re really excited to host the Alberta High School Rodeo Association in Vauxhall,” said Doerksen. “It’s a great fit for the Ag Society and gives us an opportunity to showcase our facilities while bringing a provincial youth sporting event to our community. We’re hoping the community will come out and support the event and the young athletes. With the event being free to attend, it’s a great opportunity for families to come down, watch some rodeo and support youth in our area. We also think there is a lot of value in giving young athletes an opportunity to compete in front of their families, friends and community. Hopefully, having the event here will also encourage younger kids to come out, watch the competition and see what opportunities are available to them. We encourage everyone to come out and support the competitors throughout the weekend. It’s free to attend, and we’d love to see the community come out and cheer on these young athletes! It is also a great opportunity to come and tour our new Multipurpose Building if you haven’t had the chance.”
