Celebrate at the BBQs as the M.D. of Taber turns 70

The region of Taber is a jewel in southern Alberta and is most well known for being the Corn Capital of Canada. However, there is much more to the region than its famous corn, and this year everything that makes the Municipal District (M.D.) of Taber special will be celebrated this summer. Why? It’s the M.D. of Taber’s 70th anniversary!

Events include two barbeques: one on June 20 at 4:30 p.m. held in the M.D. of Taber Municipal Park, the second on June 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Enchant Municipal Park. Both events are free to attend and will include family friendly activities. 

Reeve Miyanaga says, “As the Reeve of the Municipal District of Taber, it’s my absolute pleasure to extend a warm invitation to all our community members and neighbours to join us in commemorating a significant milestone – our 70th anniversary BBQ celebrations! This remarkable occasion is not just a marker of time, but a celebration of the vibrant spirit and enduring unity that defines our community. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of those who have come before us and each and every one of you who make the Municipal District of Taber a wonderful place to call home. 

“So, let’s come together, share stories, laughter, and share delicious BBQ as we reminisce about our past achievements and look forward to the promising future ahead. Whether you’re a long-time resident, a newcomer, or a friendly neighbour, your presence would truly make our celebrations complete. Here are some fun facts about the region: 

•It’s called the Corn Capital of Canada because of the lucky combination of fertile soil and sunny climate conditions make it perfect for growing sweet corn.

•The region was not always focused on agriculture. In the early 1900s, it was a coal mining region. The switch to ag came in after the establishment of the Taber Irrigation District.

•Alberta doesn’t have the “warmest” reputation when it comes to climate, but this region is an exception. It’s actually semi arid, which accounts for the warm summer and mild winters.

•The region celebrates a diverse culture, including a significant population of Mennonites who have contributed greatly to the culture and economy.
