Despite a snowfall late this weekend, the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Jets have begun their spring season. Opening up on the road against Prairie Baseball Academy’s Junior Varsity squad, the Jets saw three games last week.
Thursday saw a doubleheader between the two teams to kick off the spring. In the first game, Vauxhall saw their bats heat up after a long winter as they drove in 16 runs over seven innings, rolling over PBA 16-4. Aiden Sloan started on the mound for VAB and went three innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks. Sloan also notched three strikeouts in his innings of work. First man out of the bullpen was Josh Daloise, who pitched two innings of shutout ball with a strikeout and a single walk allowed. Ben Connolly finished the game off with two innings where two runs crossed the plate (one earned) on two hits and a pair of walks. The right-hander also struck out three PBA hitters.
The lineup saw contributions from all over as VAB had eight hits on the day. Kaden Carson had two hits and four RBI, Rogan Rivard notched three hits, and Will Zielinski, Jaxon George, and Kaz Harris all had one hit. Matt Getz was on base four times with walks, and Noah McIntosh and Kaleb Bozek each had two free passes. McIntosh, Rivard, and Zielinski all contributed with a stolen base in the game.
After a successful start to the spring, the Jets looked for another win in the second of the doubleheader. In a lower-scoring affair, the Jets were able to no-hit PBA and win 3-1. The combined no-hitter was thrown by Noah Simpson (six strikeouts), Cedric LeBlanc (one earned run on three walks and two strikeouts), and Bozek (two strikeouts). McIntosh had a pair of hits and a walk, Rivard had a hit, two RBI, and a BB, and George had a hit and a walk. Getz had a pair of stolen bags for the Jets in the win.
Friday saw another game between VAB and PBA, and it was the Jets’ offence that was the talk of the town. They had 25 hits scattered over the 10-inning game as VAB won 23-2. George led the way with four knocks (one home run, two doubles, four RBI), while McIntosh had a big game with seven RBI on three hits, including a home run. Gerritt Vanderwal had five hits and four RBI, Bozek and Carson each had two hits, and Mark Vulcano, Getz, and Harris all had one hit in the win. Getz, McIntosh, and Rivard all picked up a stolen base in the game as well.
Next action for the Jets is their annual trip to Las Vegas, NV. This weekend sees three games before they participate in the Bishop Gorman Tournament.
