Late in the spring season, the Vauxhall Academy of Baseball Jets are now preparing for plenty of home games. This past weekend, they were back at Jets Stadium for their annual Haven Agencies home tournament. It all kicked off on Thursday night when they hosted the Lethbridge Elks.
A big eight-run fifth inning pushed the Jets past the Elks 13-5. Totalling 14 hits in the game, Easton Kitura led the way with three, including a pair of home runs and six RBI. Gerrit Vanderwal and Tanner Morris each had two hits, Matt Getz had a home run, and Kaleb Bozek, Jaxon George, Hudson Nikkel, Kaden Carson, and Kaz Harris all contributed with a hit. Graham Thiessen started on the mound for VAB and pitched 5.2 innings with eight strikeouts. Four runs scored (three earned) on two hits and four walks. Charlie McMillan came in from the bullpen and finished the game off with an inning and one-third. He struck out two batters and allowed one earned run on two hits.
“Thursday night we played pretty well against the Lethbridge Elks, and hit some home runs, and we had a good day,” stated Les McTavish, head coach of the Jets.
The Jets were back at it on Friday when they took on the ATHX Redhawks. The Jets would fall back 7-3, and despite a strong effort to tie the game, they would ultimately fall short as they fell 7-6. Kitura had another home run, Bozek, Harris, and Getz all had a double, and Nikkel, Morris, Carson, and Thiessen had one single each. Carter Bevans was called on to start and went two and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts. Four earned runs scored on five hits and one walk. Ben Connolly finished the game, pitching 4.2 innings. Connolly would strike out a pair of batters while three runs scored (two earned) on seven hits and a single free pass.
“We didn’t play well at all. We mounted a comeback, but we just didn’t play well. We didn’t pitch it well enough, and our offence tried to get back into it, but we still didn’t even hit great. That was a tough loss because it kind of put us in a tough position that we had to win Saturday night,” said McTavish.
The Jets took on the Webber Wildcats on Saturday and needed a win to advance. In a great pitching performance, the Jets would no-hit Webber 6-1 over four innings. Noah Simpson pitched all four innings and struck out six and walked two. Nikkel would hit a solo home run, Kitura had a double and a single, and Bozek and Morris each had one hit in the win.
“We challenged them pretty hard, and we were pretty tough on them Friday night and full credit to the players and the leadership within the clubhouse because they came out and played exceptionally well on Saturday night against Webber,” said McTavish.
Despite the win, bad weather on Sunday meant the tournament was rained out.
“The tournament was rained out on Sunday, but overall I think it was a good tournament. There were some really good teams here, and we were a little short-handed. Maybe a couple of days off wasn’t the worst thing as well,” added McTavish.
Next up for the Jets is a two-game weekend against Okotoks.
