As the calendar flipped to July, the Vauxhall Spurs are now in an all-out sprint to the finish. With the regular season near its end, the Spurs are looking to accumulate as many wins as they can. The new month started with a two-game weekend as they played a pair of road doubleheaders.
On Friday evening, the Spurs were on the road to Havre to take on the Northstars. In the first game of the weekend, it was the bottom of the lineup that propelled the Spurs to a 6-1 win. Mark Vulcano had two hits while Micah Fontaine, Tanner Bullock, Ryley Jensen, Roman Pavka, and Roan Bosch all contributed with a single. Randon Lauwen took the ball to start and gave the Spurs six solid innings with seven strikeouts. The starter allowed one unearned run on three hits and a pair of walks. Bosch finished the game as the Spurs’ lone reliever and walked one and allowed one hit in his inning.
Looking to make it a 2-0 start to the weekend, the Spurs were back at it. This time, the home team was outhit 8-6, but was able to win the game 13-4. Langdyn Cummins had three hits, Parker McLaughlin hit a double, and Bosch, Jensen, Lauwen, and Vulcano all hit a single. Bullock started for Vauxhall and went five innings with two punchouts. The starter allowed 10 runs (six earned) on six hits and two walks. Ty Dorin came in and was unable to collect an out as he gave up three earned runs and walked one. Vulcano finished the game with a clean inning with one strikeout.
Sunday saw the Spurs head out to Lethbridge as they took on the Miners to wrap up the weekend. Game 1 was all Miners as the Spurs were shut out 11-0. Jensen and Sidney Pedersen had the Spurs’ hits. Fontaine was the starting pitcher and was shaky over his two innings. Seven hits and three walks led to 10 runs (eight earned). Cayden Fehr pitched the final two innings, where he struck out one and allowed a single run on three walks and two hits.
Looking to salvage a 2-2 weekend, the Spurs saw a closer game in the finale. Despite keeping the game close, the Miners hung a crooked number in the sixth inning en route to a 14-7 victory. The Spurs had nine hits but three errors in the field. Cummins had three more hits, including one triple; Bullock had two hits, and McLaughlin, Bosch, Dorin, and Pedersen all had a hit. Bosch started on the mound and went five innings with two strikeouts. Four runs (three earned) were scored as Bosch gave up three hits and walked six batters. Pedersen was the first man out of the bullpen and was unable to collect an out. He gave up six earned runs on two hits and three walks. Vulcano collected one out but allowed four earned runs on three walks. McLaughlin finished the game by getting two outs, and he also walked one batter.
The Spurs look to regroup this coming weekend when they play in the Bitterroot Tournament. They kick things off on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against the Spokane Crew. On Saturday, they take on the Butte Miners at 2:30 p.m., and then the Bitterroot Red Sox at 4:45 p.m. Sunday sees the team wrap up the round-robin with a game against the Laurel Dodgers at 10 a.m.
