Spurs cap off regular season with wins

It was the last week of regular season action for the Vauxhall Spurs. With five doubleheaders to wrap things up, the Spurs were looking to add a bunch of wins and create some momentum heading into the biggest games of the year.

On July 14, the Spurs were at home to take on the Great Falls Chargers. In the first doubleheader, both teams would plate plenty of runs, but it was Vauxhall who was able to carve out a 12-9 victory. Roman Pavka led the way with two singles and a double, Roan Bosch hit a double and a single, Tanner Bullock and Randon Lauwen hit a double each, and Parker McLaughlin, Sidney Pedersen, Ryley Jensen, and Micah Fontaine all had a hit in the win. Bullock started on the mound and gave the Spurs seven strikeouts over four innings. Seven runs would score (three earned) on four walks and seven hits. Jensen finished the game on the mound with three innings and five punch outs. Two runs scored (one earned) on two hits.

The second game was all Spurs as they cruised to a 15-1 win over the Chargers. Bosch hit two doubles, Langdyn Cummins and Parker McLaughlin hit a double and a single, and Pedersen had two hits. Bullock reached via a double and Pavka, and Ty Dorin each notched a hit in the win. Bosch pitched all five innings and struck out 11 hitters. One unearned run would score on a hit and four walks.

The next day saw the Spurs head to Great Falls for a rematch. In game one, the Spurs would outhit Great Falls 8-1 en route to a 5-0 win. The Spurs would complete the four-game sweep over Great Falls with a 9-2 win in the final game. Jensen had a pair of hits, Cummins, Pavka, and Dorin hit doubles, and McLaughlin and Pedersen had singles. Fontaine pitched six scoreless innings and had 10 strikeouts in his appearance. He allowed only two hits and didn’t walk a batter. Pavka pitched the final inning and allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk. He also struck out one batter.

There wasn’t much rest for Vauxhall as they were back on the diamond on Thursday for a doubleheader against the Tri-County Cardinals. The first game was a low-scoring affair as a sixth-inning go-ahead run for the Cardinals was all it took for a 2-1 win. Bullock had a pair of hits, including a double, Pedersen hit a double, and Pavka, Lauwen, and Dorin each had a hit. Cayden Fehr took the ball to start and pitched all six innings. The starter struck out four and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks.

Looking to head back home with a split, the Spurs were in tough after spotting six runs in the first inning. They would score a few runs, but the Cards were able to extend their lead further and take the game 9-3. Cummins had two hits, Lauwen and Pavka had a double each, and Pedersen and Bosch had one hit. Pedersen pitched 5.2 innings with nine runs allowed (eight earned) on two walks and nine hits. He punched out three batters in the start. McLaughlin collected a single out as the Spurs’ lone reliever.

Both teams would travel to Vauxhall for the rematch on July 17. The Spurs were thankful for some home cooking as they jumped out to a lead and never let their foot off the pedal. In the end, the Spurs walked away with a 7-1 victory. Jensen was rock solid on the mound, pitching all seven innings with three strikeouts. One unearned run would score on two hits and two walks. Cummins, McLaughlin, and Pavka all had two hits, Lauwen hit a triple, and Bosch and Bullock each had one hit.

The Spurs looked to return the doubleheader sweep at home later that day. The Cardinals would score seven runs across the first three innings, and that proved too much as Vauxhall fell 10-6. Bosch had a double and a single, Pavka and Jensen had two singles, and Cummins, Bullock, and Fontaine all notched a hit. Nixon Donald started on the mound and pitched an inning and one-third. Six runs scored (five earned) on three hits and six walks. Pavka was called from the bullpen and pitched 4.2 innings. Three runs came home (two earned) on a pair of walks and four hits. McLaughlin finished the game with one inning where he allowed one earned run on two hits and a walk.

Sunday saw the final two games of the regular season for the Spurs as they took on Fort Macleod at home. The first game saw the Spurs charge out with a 7-0 win. Bullock pitched 5.2 shutout innings with five strikeouts. He walked two and surrendered three hits. Fontaine finished the game with an inning and one-third, where he struck out one and allowed two hits. Pavka hit a double and a single, Bosch had a double, and Cummins and McLaughlin had one hit each.

The final game was the same result as the Spurs beat the Royals 7-0 yet again. Bosch was solid on the mound, pitching a four-inning shutout with three strikeouts and allowing one hit and a walk. Pavka and Bullock had two hits each, Jensen had a double, and Cummins, Pedersen, Dorin, and Mark Vulcano all had singles.

Next up for the Spurs is the Class ‘A’ North District tournament this weekend in Great Falls. The Spurs finished in third place in North ‘A’ standings with a 19-9 record. Havre finished in first while Lethbridge was in second place. The Spurs will take on the six-seed Great Falls Chargers on Thursday. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. at Don Olson Field.
