The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is now investigating after a Brooks RCMP member discharged their service weapon during a warrant apprehension on July 15 that left one man dead.

RCMP say they were conducting an apprehension at a residence in Greenbrook Village at approximately 4 p.m. when a confrontation occurred after officers knocked on the door.

Mounties says the wanted male, who remains unnamed at the time of publication, attempted to flee police while producing a weapon.

An officer discharged their service weapon and shot the suspect who succumbed to his injuries while first responders performed life-saving efforts.

No officers were injured during the confrontation.

Following compliance with legislative requirements, the Police Review Commission was immediately notified and ASIRT investigators will now conduct an independent investigation into the officers actions.

“The RCMP believes in accountability and transparency and in so doing will provide full support to the ASIRT investigators,” reads a media statement.

ASIRT will also conduct an internal review process to gain a full account of the actions that took place during the police-involved shooting and will be reviewing policy, police response and the officer’s duty status.
