O

ct. 1 will be a big day for senior citizens throughout the Family and Community Support Services coverage area to come together for an amazing day.

On the first Thursday of October, the Inter Pipeline Community Centre Auditorium will host a free Seniors’ Expo from 1-4 p.m.

“We just want to have a really fun and welcoming afternoon, where seniors can get together and they can see what’s available for services for different organizations that are going to be attending,” said Renee White, Senior Support Worker for FCSS. “It will be a great opportunity for seniors to learn about programs that are available and also connect with people they maybe haven’t seen in a long time from other areas.”

The expo will feature a wide array of exhibits and service-provider booths, in conjunction with interactive displays provided by the Coaldale and Lethbridge Men’s Sheds and the Taber Public Library.

“That’s different and new and exciting,” said White of the interactive nature of the expo. “We’re really excited about both of those because we think those will be a lot of fun for the seniors to check out and to participate in.”

Seniors from the M.D. of Taber, County of Warner and the County of Lethbridge are encouraged to stop by anytime between 1-4 p.m. for an afternoon that will also include a guest speaker and wellness sessions that will feature mindful movement and gentle chair yoga.

“The goal is to get seniors out to see what’s available in their communities and how they can get more active,” said White. “It’s also a chance for seniors to take a minute and talk to the service providers, ask them questions or maybe get information to connect at a later time.”

Over 30 booths will be set up inside the auditorium, which promises to provide a little something for everyone, according to White.

“There will be lots of variety.”

Naturally, seniors will enjoy the beverages and food FCSS will roll out at the expo, which will include a signature mocktail. Pair that with some fun and exciting games, and it will be a full afternoon of activities.

“If they feel like challenging their neighbour from different communities or just their buddy they brought along, they can enjoy a mocktail and play a game of cornhole,” said Cindy Lauwen, Senior Support Worker for FCSS. “They’ll have some cards set out and some other games too so they can get together, chat and play cards or whatever they feel like.”

And if seniors do not have their own transportation to get to the expo, there are plenty of options.

“If you live in Milk River, Coutts and Warner, people can call the Heritage Bus for a ride,” said White. “These rides are all free too – they’re paid for by FCSS. If you’re in Raymond and Stirling, they have the Raymond Handibus they can call. If you’re in Picture Butte, then they just need to get a hold of the Picture Butte Senior Centre, and they can add their name to the list there.”
