Keep it Clean is hosting a webinar on creating market-ready canola, cereal and pulse crops.
The webinar, which will take place on Wednesday, July 30 at 11 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. MT) over Zoom, will feature presentations by by Krista Zuzak, director of crop protection and production for Cereals Canada, Jeff English, vice president of marketing and communications for Pulse Canada, and Ian Epp, agronomy specialist for Canola Council of Canada, a live question and answer period, and delve into topics such as best practices for avoiding unacceptable product residues, how to properly stage crops for pre-harvest glyphosate application, why it’s essential to follow pre-harvest intervals (PHIs), and how to scout effectively for disease.
“Applying a product like pre-harvest glyphosate for weed control too early can lead to unacceptable residues in harvested grain, putting market access at risk,” says Zuzak. “Following label directions – like waiting until grain moisture is below 30 per cent in the least mature part of the field – helps prevent residue issues that could threaten grower access to this important tool. Proper use is key to maintaining both market trust and long-term grower choice.”
Webinar participants will also learn more about Keep it Clean’s digital tools, including the Pre-Harvest Glyphosate Staging Guide, which provides visual examples to help determine when moisture content is less than 30 per cent in the grain crop, and the Pre-Harvest Interval Calculator, which allows users to look up a product’s PHI by active ingredient or brand name, allowing growers to make informed spraying decisions.
Keep it Clean is a joint initiative consisting of the Canola Council of Canada, Cereals Canada, Pulse Canada and the Prairie Oat Growers Association, and is funded through the AgriMarketing Program under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. It aims provide Canadian growers, agronomists and retailers with resources for on-farm practices that help them grow market-ready crops, meet local and global customer standards and reduce the risk of market access problems, crop diseases, and contaminants.
“Keep it Clean’s pre-harvest tips and tools provide important information that can help to reduce the risk of market access issues, including rejected shipments due to residues that exceed maximum residue limits (MRLs) as well as crop diseases and contaminants,” said Zuzak. “Following these tips is about protecting more than just this year’s crop, it’s about protecting Canada’s long-standing reputation as a quality supplier of cereals, pulses and canola. With ongoing trade pressures and evolving regulations, it’s more important than ever that we all do our part to keep markets open.”
This is Keep it Clean’s 5th webinar in their pre-harvest tips and tools series, and will run about an hour long. Those interested in attending the webinar must register online at keepitclean.ca.
