The Municipal District of Taber extended condolences for former Councillor Erling Odland, who passed away on May 18 at the age of 98.

Odland served as Councillor for District 7 (Vauxhall area) from 1961 to 1964.

“During his time on Council, he was known for his strong work ethic, practicality, and commitment to improving rural life for residents,” reads a statement from the MD of Taber. “One of his lasting contributions was his dedication to ensuring that every road in his district was gravelled right to residents’ gates—a reflection of his belief that infrastructure should serve the everyday needs of people in the community.”

Born on Sept. 18, 1927, in Varhaug, Norway, Odland immigrated to Canada with his family and built a life rooted in hard work, resilience, and stewardship of the land. As a farmer, he demonstrated foresight and independence, shaping the dryland farm that became known to many as the Erling and Helen Odland family farm. Alongside his beloved wife Helen, whom he married in 1954, Odland built not only a successful farm but a strong and loving family.

Odland will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and community member.

His nearly century-long life was marked by dedication to family, service to community, and a genuine care for others. Even in his later years, he remained connected to those around him, valuing friendship and companionship.

“On behalf of Council and staff, we honour Erling Odland’s contributions to our municipality and thank him for his service. His legacy will be remembered in the community he helped build and the lives he touched.”
