Vauxhall town council is hoping to complete a new strategic plan in 2022.
Council and administration are beginning the early process of starting a new plan after approving $10,000 in funding for the project in their 2022 budget. Administration has been in contact with two different consultants and both will be brought forward to council’s March 7 meeting.
During their regular meeting on Feb. 22, council was asked by administration to provide some feedback on what they want to see from the strategic plan moving forward.
“We need to develop a terms of reference for the consultants being considered in the preparation of the strategic plan,” stated Mayor Ray Coad.
Administration also specifically asked if council wanted an assessment of the previous plan (2017-2020), a needs assessment (community assets, needs and opportunities), a community stakeholders’ information session, or some sort of time frame, if any, from start to finish. Coad and Coun. Margaret Plumtree had also wanted council to consider where they see Vauxhall in three, five, or even 10 years.
“This is a living document that can be referred to throughout the budget process and throughout the year. Keeping that in mind, are some of these suggestions here a little bit too high level? Or not high level enough?” asked Coad. “Being able to identify in our own minds what we expect the Town of Vauxhall to be in the next three, five, or 10 years is an important element. If you start giving out beyond three years it’s pretty loosey gooey. My personal opinion is that we don’t want Vauxhall to grow out of control, but we do want to see investment people have put into the community protected and the way to protect that is to have moderate growth.”
One area discussed by council was opening up the discussion to organizations within the town to get their feedback on what they want to see in a Vauxhall strategic plan.
